How to backflush for Espresso Coffee Machine - AMPTO

This is the most important routine procedure for your machine life.

Backflushing is a simple and effective way to clean your espresso machine and keep it in optimal condition. Backflushing removes the coffee oils, grounds and residues that can accumulate in the brew group, shower screen and three-way valve of your machine. By doing this regularly, you can prevent clogging, improve the taste of your espresso and extend the life of your machine.

To backflush your espresso machine, you will need a blind filter (a filter basket with no holes or a rubber disc that covers the holes), a portafilter, a backflush detergent and a clean cloth. Here are the steps to follow:

1. Remove the regular filter basket from the portafilter and insert the blind filter. Add about half a teaspoon of backflush detergent to the blind filter. You can use a special cleaner designed for espresso machines, such as Espresso Parts Cleaning Powder Add to your cart now
2. Lock the portafilter into the brew group and turn on the pump for about 10 seconds. You will hear the pump get quieter as the pressure builds up. Then turn off the pump and let the pressure release through the three-way valve into the drip tray. You will hear a "whoosh" sound as the water and detergent are flushed out of the brew group.
3. Repeat this process several times until the water coming out of the valve is clear and free of foam. This may take 5 to 10 cycles depending on how dirty your machine is.
4. Remove the portafilter and rinse it well under running water to remove any detergent residue. Replace the blind filter with the regular filter basket.
5. Lock the portafilter back into the brew group and flush it with clean water for a few seconds to rinse out any remaining detergent from the brew group. You can also wipe the shower screen with a damp cloth to remove any coffee particles.
6. Your espresso machine is now backflushed and ready to use!

Backflushing your espresso machine is an easy way to maintain its performance and quality. You should backflush your machine with water every day or after every 10 shots of espresso, and with detergent once a month or after every 50 shots of espresso. This will help you enjoy delicious espresso for a long time!
