How to Make a Maintenance in a Steam Handle of Espresso Machines
If you own an espresso machine, you know how important it is to keep it clean and well-maintained. One of the parts that needs regular attention is the steam handle, also known as the steam wand. This is the part that allows you to froth milk for cappuccinos, lattes, and other milk-based drinks.

The steam handle can get clogged with milk residue and bacteria, which can affect the performance of the machine and the hygiene of your drinks. Therefore, you should clean it every time you use it and do a thorough maintenance every few months. Here are some steps to follow to keep your steam handle in good shape.

Daily Cleaning

- After every use, wipe the steam handle with a damp cloth to remove any milk droplets or splashes. This will prevent them from drying and hardening on the surface of the wand.
- Before and after every use, purge the steam handle by opening the valve for a few seconds. This will release any steam or water that may be trapped inside the wand and flush out any milk residue or bacteria that may have entered the wand during frothing.
- At the end of each day, do a full backflush of your machine. This involves using a blind filter and a coffee machine detergent to clean the group heads and remove any coffee oils or grounds that may have accumulated. This will also help clean the internal parts of the machine, including the steam valve.

Periodic Maintenance

- Every few months, depending on how often you use your machine, you should do a deeper cleaning of your steam handle. This involves removing the tip of the wand and soaking it in a solution of warm water and detergent. You can use a special steam cleaning wand solution or a mild dish soap. Let the tip soak for at least 20 minutes or overnight if possible.
- After soaking, use a small brush or a pin to clean the holes of the tip and remove any blockages or buildup. Rinse the tip well with water and reattach it to the wand.
- Fill a pitcher with water and place it under the steam handle. Open the valve and let the water run through the wand for 10 seconds. Repeat this four times to rinse out any detergent or residue from inside the wand.
- Clean the draining hose of your machine by removing any coffee grounds or debris that may have clogged it. You can use a brush or a pipe cleaner to do this. This will prevent water from backing up in your drip tray or overflowing.
